Biocide for Controlling Bacteria and Fungi in the Mill

Bacteria and fungi grow in the juice and on the surfaces of a sugar cane mill and eat into the sugar. A biocide, sold as SVI CIDE 800, controls that growth and can be fed at the milling station.

This guide explains what the biocide does, where it fits, and how it is fed.

What Biocide Does

A biocide is a fungicide and bactericide used to control the microbes that grow in a sugar cane mill.

It is highly effective at holding back the growth of both bacteria and fungi found at the mill.

By controlling that growth, the biocide protects the sugar in the juice from loss to microbes.

Where It Fits in the Plant

The biocide fits at the sugar cane mill, where juice and warm surfaces let bacteria and fungi grow.

It can be fed at the milling station, right where the juice is being pressed from the cane.

Wherever microbial growth at the mill would cost sugar, the biocide is fed to control it.

Key Properties

The main properties of this product are listed below.

  • Specific gravity is 1.17
  • pH is 11.5 plus or minus 1.0
  • Transmittance is 95 percent minimum
  • Odour is hydrogen sulphide
  • Activity is 40 percent
  • Supplied in a 50 Kg HDPE drum

What Makes It Effective

The product is judged by how well it does its job in the process.

Strong Control of Bacteria and Fungi

The biocide must hold back both bacteria and fungi. Its strength as a fungicide and bactericide is what makes it effective at the mill.

Fed Right at the Mill

Because it can be fed at the milling station, the biocide reaches the microbes where they first take hold in the juice.

How It Is Used

The biocide is fed at the milling station, into the juice as it is pressed from the cane.

Fed there, it reaches the bacteria and fungi where they first grow in the mill.

Used this way, it controls the microbial growth and protects the sugar in the juice.
