Antiscalant for Preventing Scale in Evaporators and Pans

Scale builds up on the heating surfaces of evaporators and pans and cuts the heat transfer. An antiscalant, sold as SVI VAP 900, holds that scale back so the equipment runs longer between boil outs.

This guide explains what the antiscalant does, where it fits, and how it is dosed.

What Antiscalant Does

An antiscalant is used to inhibit the formation of scale in evaporators, vacuum pans and juice heating equipment.

It is very effective at inhibiting oxalates, carbonates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and other scale forming elements in cane juice.

It extends the operational time of the equipment by reducing the frequency of boil outs.

Where It Fits in the Plant

The antiscalant fits at the evaporators, the vacuum pans and the juice heaters, where scale forms on the heating surfaces.

It is dosed into the juice so that scale is held back across the heating train.

Wherever scale on the heating surfaces is cutting heat transfer, the antiscalant is dosed to inhibit it.

Key Properties

The main properties of this product are listed below.

  • Form is a pale yellow liquid
  • Specific gravity is 1.15 to 1.25
  • pH is 7 plus or minus 0.5
  • Inhibits oxalates, carbonates, phosphates, silicates and sulphates
  • Reduces the frequency of boil outs
  • Supplied in a 215 Kg HDPE drum

What Makes It Effective

The product is judged by how well it does its job in the process.

Broad Scale Inhibition

The antiscalant must hold back many kinds of scale. Its effect against oxalates, carbonates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and other scale forming elements is what keeps the heating surfaces clean.

Longer Runs, Fewer Boil Outs

Because it reduces the frequency of boil outs, the antiscalant extends operational time and cuts the cost of fuel, maintenance, chemicals and labour.

How It Is Used

The antiscalant is dosed into the juice ahead of the evaporators, vacuum pans and juice heaters.

Dosed there, it inhibits the scale forming elements before they build up on the heating surfaces.

Used this way, it keeps heat transfer up and extends the run between boil outs.
