Flocculants for Clarification and Filtration

Fine suspended solids in the juice will not settle on their own and cloud the clarified stream. Flocculants, sold as SVI FLOC, gather those solids so they settle and leave a clear juice for the clarifier.

This guide explains what the flocculants do, where they fit, and how they are dosed.

What Flocculants Does

Flocculants are high molecular weight anionic products in an active powder form used for clarification.

They come in grades, SVI FLOC 724 for sugar syrup clarification, SVI FLOC 725 for filtrate clarification, and SVI FLOC 985 for syrup and juice clarification.

By gathering fine solids into settling flocs, they accelerate settling and produce a mud cake of good density for clarification.

Where It Fits in the Plant

Flocculants fit at the clarification and filtration stations, where suspended solids must be settled out.

They are used in clarifiers, thickeners, vacuum filters and lime softeners, and also benefit filtrate juices and cane syrup.

Wherever fine solids must be settled from the stream, the right grade of flocculant is dosed.

Key Properties

The main properties of this product are listed below.

  • Form is an active or free flowing powder
  • Odour is low
  • Soluble in water
  • Anionic, high molecular weight
  • Often works at very low dosages
  • Supplied in bags or drums with a plastic lining

What Makes It Effective

The product is judged by how well it does its job in the process.

Fast Settling of Solids

The flocculant must gather fine solids so they settle. It accelerates the settling of suspended colloidal impurities and produces a mud cake of good density, which is what makes for good clarification.

Works at Low Dosage

Because it often works at very low dosages, a little flocculant clarifies a large flow, which keeps it effective and economical.

How It Is Used

Flocculants are dosed into the stream ahead of the clarifier, thickener, vacuum filter or lime softener.

Dosed there, they gather the fine solids into flocs that settle and leave a clear stream.

Because they work at low dosage, only a small amount is needed for a large flow.
